Ribera del Duero

Ribera del Duero and Burgos

This 4 day/3 night package self-drive package encompasses the wine region of Ribera del Duero and the beautiful city of Burgos. Just two hours north of Madrid, this adventure makes a perfect pre or post add-on to a stay in Spain’s magnificent capital city.

Ribera del Duero is nicely off-the-tourist-track and famous for its bold red wines and the elegant Castilian city of Burgos is noted for its hearty cuisine. Hombre does not live by food & wine alone and there are monasteries, ancient abbeys and Gothic cathedrals to explore. Burgos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the birthplace of legendary hero El Cid Campeador and an important stop in the Way of St. James Pilgrimage.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1
Depart Madrid and drive north to the wine region of Ribera del Duero where castles and ruined fortresses punctuate the landscape. Ribera del Duero is one of the most important wine producing areas in Spain. Your destination is an award-winning winery currently producing some of Spain's most critically acclaimed red wines. This prestigious winery features a Romanesque abbey on its grounds, in addition to a five-star hotel, where you spend your first night. Your private tour includes the cellars with the winery's enologist, a vineyard tour by 4x4 and a visit to the estate's painstakingly restored 12th century abbey.
Day 1
Lunch will be a 7-course tasting menu paired with wines in the hotel's restaurant. After lunch, drive to the nearby village of Penafiel, where a 12th century castle has been turned into a museum dedicated to Ribera del Duero wines.
Day 2
Breakfast at the hotel, check out and drive to an acclaimed Ribera winery. Here, the family has been making wine for three generations. After a private guided tour and tasting of the bodega's flagship wines with some delicious local chorizo and cheese; continue on to the elegant city of Burgos. This historic city is an important stop on the Saint James pilgrimage route (the Camino de Santiago) and famous for its 13th century Gothic Cathedral. For almost five-hundred years, Burgos was the capital of Old Castile and it is also the birthplace of El Cid, the 11th century popular hero.
Day 2
Spend the afternoon strolling the leafy riverside promenades. You can tour the Cathedral on your own or we can arrange a private guided tour with a local art historian. Tonight, dine at a landmark restaurant on a specially prepared 5-course tasting menu paired with Ribera del Duero wines. Overnight in your 4* hotel. This former 16th century convent now houses a modern and sleek hotel with views across the Arlanzon river to the Cathedral spires.
Day 3
Breakfast at the hotel and head out to explore the picturesque countryside north of Burgos. Called La Bureba, this historic region is famous for its plethora of castles, fortresses, monasteries and medieval villages. The main villages here are Frias, Poza de la Sal and Ona. Frias in particular is a must-see village. Within the old walls, trace the narrow cobbled streets as you stroll past half-timbered houses and up to the castle crowning the top of this beautifully preserved village. Within the castle you can climb the ramparts and enjoy fabulous views below of Frias and surrounding countryside.
Day 3
Lunch will be in the nearby village of Heran. Owners Jorge and Lourdes prepare delicious regional dishes based on fresh seasonal produce and featuring baby lamb. In Fall, they use a wide variety of local game and wild mushrooms. Return to Burgos late afternoon. Overnight in Burgos.
Day 4
Breakfast at the hotel and your day is at leisure. Perhaps a cooking lesson or shopping. On the drive back to Madrid, consider stopping at Covarrubias, a medieval village considered to be one of the most picturesque in the region and the nearby monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, famous for its Romanesque cloister
