Priorat and Tarragona

Priorat and Tarragona

Two hours south of Barcelona, this dramatic landscape produces complex, internationally acclaimed wines thanks to old vines and slate-heavy soils. The five-day package includes an expert wine guide, visits to artisanal wineries, a traditional Catalonian cooking class in Gratallops, and a tasting of local charcuterie and cheeses in La Vilella Baixa. Finally, explore the Roman ruins and gothic cathedral in the Mediterranean city of Tarragona. Cap off the day by fer el vermut or “doing vermouth”: kicking back with an aperitif in one of the Old Town’s outdoor cafes.

About the Wineries

We have an extensive group of wineries whose owners we know and with whom we work regularly, so we can guarantee high-level visits even if a winery has to be substituted. Please let us know if there is a particular winery you would like to visit. Tours confirmed once the dates are set.

Sample Itinerary

Day 1
Private transfer from Barcelona to the Priorat and a private guide will meet you in Falset to begin exploring the region. The Priorat is home to a cadre of enterprising winemakers drawn by the old vines and the distinctive native grapes and slate dominated soils. The wines here continually win international praise and awards. Drive to the hill-top village of La Figuera to taste some DO Montsant wines at Ficaria Vins. Making no more than 8,000 bottles a year, one of which is a 100% Garnacha (Grenache) wine, the winemaker gave up his job as an accountant to dedicate himself to his family vineyards and his true calling. The visit includes a drive out to see some ancient Garnacha vineyards with sweeping views over nearby countryside. Call into an small village shop for an introduction to olive oil tasting with Neus, an olive grower and artisanal oil maker.
Day 1
Lunch will be at a small winery with its own restaurant, Clos Figueras winery is owned by Bordeaux wine negocient, Christopher Cannan. You will be tasting through their wines with lunch. After lunch, meet a charming 71-year-old vineyard and winery owner in Priorat. He and his son are unusual as they make wine in both Priorat and Montsant wine appellations. Drive up into the vineyards in a 4x4 vehicle to see the system of natural vine rearing. Drive back down to the Montsant estate for a full tasting of around 8 wines (white and red, Priorat and Montsant). Continue to Hotel La Siuranella set in the stunning cliff-top village of Siurana, a formerly Moorish town and home to a 12th century Romanesque church. Dinner at Els Tallers Restaurant in the hotel. Chef Pau Escriu and his French wife Anais Chauveau founded Els Tallers after working in some of the best kitchens in Spain.
Day 2
Breakfast at the hotel. Your first winery visit will be to Clos de l'Obac in Gratallops, owned by one of the original Priorat pioneers who in the 1970s saw the potential in the mostly abandoned vines of the region, and helped to lead Priorat to world-wide winemaking fame. The Priorat is known for its powerful Grenache and Carignan wines. The visit and tasting at Clos de l'Obac winery will be with owner Carles Pastrana. Next you will have a private cooking class with a Priorat native who has been teaching the traditional cuisine of Catalonia for over 10 years. Before lunch she will lead you on a tasting of some of the best wines of the region. Enjoy a traditional lunch accompanied by wine. Free time to stroll the streets of Falset before returning to Siurana. Dinner on your own in the village or in the hotel.
Day 3
Breakfast at the hotel. You cannot come to the Priorat without visiting "the New York of the Priorat", the village of La Vilella Baixa, known for the tall buildings towering over the surroundings. You will visit an artisanal sausage maker for a tasting of local Catalan charcuterie. Your guide will then drive you to Capafonts in the Prades Mountains where we will meet Sergi and Eva, artisanal cheese makers from La Vall del Brugent. You will see traditional goat cheese making in action, going with them to take the goats out to pasture and afterwards, back in the village, you will have a tasting of their artisanal cheeses. Your lunch spot is right in the village, across the street from Sergi and Eva's creamery. At Menjador Rural Ca La Teresa you will enjoy hearty, traditional mountain cuisine from the region.
Day 3
In the afternoon your guide will take you on a 1 to 2 hour hike in the back country of the mountainous Priorat region. See vineyards and villages up close, and stop for a glass of wine at a small winery. No special footgear required. Return to Siurana. Dinner in a simple restaurant in the town, or in the hotel's restaurant.
Day 4
Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will head to the Mediterranean city of Tarragona. Founded by the Romans, Tarragona, known as Tarraco, became an important Roman city. Today, Tarragona possesses the remains of a Roman amphitheater and circus complex, as well as Roman city walls. You will have a guided walking tour around Tarragona visiting the Roman ruins and the Gothic cathedral. Stop to fer el vermut, or have a traditional vermouth aperitif, in one of the Old Town's many outdoor cafes. We will recommend one of our favorite casual tapas restaurants in town for lunch, walking distance from your hotel. Enjoy the afternoon on your own strolling the Tarragona streets.
