About Pantelleria

The name Pantelleria derives from the Arabic ‘Bint el Riah’ or ‘Daughter of the Wind’, and the island is actually located closer to Tunisia than Italy, 65 km to be precise. It is the result of ancient volcanic activity which created an underwater volcano sticking out of the surface of the sea.

Scorched black magma rocks and ‘calderic’ collapses have, however, left a hilly but incredibly fertile land, home to pines, oak, olives, blueberries and even cactus fruit.

The ‘dammuso’ is the typical building of Pantelleria and their strikingly white dome vaults make the island’s landscape unique. The purpose of the vaults is to direct rainwater  to a cistern.

The capers of Pantelleria are regarded by the experts as having the best in the world.
