Savor James Beard’s Portland

September 24 - 28, 2017

Discover the Portland that “America’s First Foodie” and world-renowned culinary authority, James Beard, loved so much! For this culinary adventure, Tour de Forks has teamed up with award-winning food/travel writer — Kathleen Squires--and famed Maitre D’ of “Chef’s Dinner Series — Ronnie Rodriguez. Both are producers of the American Masters' PBS documentary about James Beard called “America’s First Foodie!” and both will be eating and drinking with us as we follow James Beard's footsteps.

You will get an exclusive insider’s experience of the Portland food scene by meeting and eating at the restaurants of many of the chefs in this documentary, eat at food carts, have a few cups of the reason why Portland has taken over Seattle as the #1 coffee city in the US, and learn firsthand why the Willamette Valley has been named the “Best Wine Region in the World for 2016” by Wine Enthusiast. Portland has also become leaders in craft beer and is making its mark with distilled spirits.

So by the end of our time together, you’ll be saying Willamette Valley like a local and you’ll know why James Beard loved Portland! Get ready to eat your way through PDX!

Day 1: Sunday, Sept 24th – Arrival and Welcome Dinner

Arrive in Portland. Check into Hotel Modera, located in the downtown area.

Drinks at the Heathman Hotel where JB did his radio show — We’ll toast JB and our PDX adventure with Oregon Welcome Bubbles at the grand piano in the lobby of the Heathman Hotel.

Welcome Dinner at Headwaters where JBF Award Winning Chef Vitaly Paley will greet us and cook a special dinner for our group.

Overnight at Hotel Modera

Day 2: Monday, Sept 25th – Visit to Willamette Valley and Screening of America’s First Foodie!

Breakfast at hotel but save room for donuts and coffee.

Meet in lobby for our private transfer to Willamette Valley. On this day trip, you’ll get to practice saying “Willamette Valley,” taste amazing wines from select wineries and enjoy craft beers with a nibble or two along the way. We’ll have a full day exploring this valley named as the “Best Wine Region in the World for 2016” by Wine Enthusiast.

Return to PDX.

This evening, we’ll have a private screening of America's First Foodie followed by a Q & A with the film’s producers: Kathleen Squires, Ronnie Rodriguez, and the Portland-based producer/director Beth Federici.

Meet Chef Cathy Whims, owner of Nostrana. She has specially designed your dinner.

Day 3: Tuesday, Sept 26th — Donut/Coffee Tour, Cooking Class with Jenn Louis and Dinner at Chesa

Breakfast at your hotel.

Meet in the lobby to meet the guide for our walking coffee/donut tour of Northwest Portland. Travel & Leisure just named Portland the #1 coffee city in the USA! Today we’ll learn why, and have some donuts to dunk too.

Hands-On Cooking Class and lunch with Top Chef Master Jenn Louis at her new restaurant, Ray. You'll receive a signed copy of The Book of Greens, co-authored by Jenn Louis and Kathleen Squires.

Afternoon at LEISURE.

Dinner at Chesa — Meet Chef José Chesa and his wife and partner, Cristina Báez who will also be cooking a special meal just for our group at Chesa. Be ready for tapas!

Overnight at Hotel Modera.

Day 4: Wednesday, Sept. 27th – Food Carts, Spirits Tasting and Farewell Dinner

Breakfast at your hotel.
Morning at LEISURE.

Food Carts & Neighborhoods Tour — We’ll get on board Harry the Van to visit five food cart pods with diverse eats that highlight Portland's food cart scene.

Tour/Tasting at House Spirits in Distillery Row — We’ll sample their award winning aquavit, vodka and whiskey.

Return to Hotel Modera.

Farewell Dinner at Beast where we will meet Naomi Pomeroy, the chef/owner of Beast and past winner of a James Beard Foundation Award. She will create a memorable dinner – the perfect ending to our PDX culinary adventure.

Day 5: September 28th – Departure
